London collective Y release brand new single ‘Skipper’ (video here), out today (October 21st) via SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special) & Hideous Mink Records (Alien Chicks, Opus Kink) following last night’s BBC 6 Music Steve Lamacq premiere.

Emerging from the capital’s ever-fertile underground, Y have quickly carved out a reputation as one of the UK’s most fearless new bands, cutting their teeth at The Windmill (a rite of passage for South London’s most adventurous acts) and ticking off supports alongside the likes Fat Dog, KEG and Warmduscher in the process. With a sold-out headliner at the iconic 100 Club earlier this year, the group spent the summer conquering festivals including The Great Escape, Brighten The Corners and Manchester Psych Festival, and have a London show at Third Man Records, Soho lined up for October 30th to celebrate their new single.

With support circulating throughout the press community from So Young, DIY, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit and Rough Trade, and across the airwaves of BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq, Amy Lamé, Emily Pilbeam) and Radio X (John Kennedy) following the release of acclaimed debut EP ‘Y’, the outfit very much stand at the forefront of a new wave of boundary-defying UK acts, and with their new release ‘Skipper’, they keep one foot in the underground, and the other stomping loudly on the future.

Speaking on ‘Skipper’, Y added: “‘Skipper’ was an obvious choice for our next single, as we’ve always had a strong reaction from audiences, when playing it live. With this track we wanted to push the sound we’ve become known for, restless and relentless. Lyrically the track ‘Skipper’ addresses class divide and hierarchy in which the rich skip through a world they feel they own. It is written like an acid trip, full of word play. Sonically, ‘Skipper’ aggresses against the outdated; It takes influences from the best of the past, whilst being firmly set in the now but with an eye on the future.”

Y’s ‘Skipper’ is out now via SO Recordings and Hideous Mink Records and available on all digital platforms.

Y is Adam Brennan (vocals, guitar), Sophie Coppin (vocals, synth), Dan GB (bass), Fells (drums), Harry Mchale (sax)
