Brussels – Brussels-based power trio Under The Reefs Orchestra return with "Banquise", featuring Catherine Graindorge, out 12th January 2026 via cult Belgian-French label Capitane Records. The second single from their forthcoming third album (2026) invites a key figure of the European experimental scene into their sonic world, where her incandescent viola carves cracks through the ice sheet and unleashes tectonic forces beneath the surface.
"Banquise" evokes frozen immensities, raw wilderness, and the beauty that precedes collapse. It conjures a vision of grand, untamed creatures wandering through a supernatural world, frozen by the powerful breath of a blind god. A sensory fresco on the edge of rupture, suspended between contemplation and catastrophe.
Carried by six minutes of atmospheric groove, the track is built around a hypnotic clave, a bass saxophone riff, an expansive and melodic guitar theme, and a viola improvisation of rare intensity by Catherine Graindorge. Here, the band reveals the most rock-infused side of its influences, with echoes of Tortoise, Sons of Kemet, and Lounge Lizards, whilst remaining true to its identity: free, adventurous music driven by subtle tension.
Catherine Graindorge, a pillar of Belgium's experimental music scene, brings her singular approach to the viola—disrupting the balance and fuelling the embers of improvisation, further broadening the sonic universe of Under The Reefs Orchestra.
A New Album Exploring the Heavens
After making volcanoes roar on 'Sakurajima' (2022), acclaimed by international press and notably ranked among the 22 best albums of the year by Spin Magazine, Under The Reefs Orchestra open a new cycle. The trio—Clément Nourry (guitar, Yokaï, The Soldiers of Love), Marti Mélia (baritone saxophone, Flat Earth Society, Don Kapot), and Jakob Warmenbol (drums, Don Kapot, Kabaal)—now explore longer, groove-driven and more improvised forms, where the breath of jazz becomes irresistible.
In the studio, Under The Reefs Orchestra expand and welcome several distinguished guests: An Pierlé, Catherine Graindorge, and Alejandra Borzyk (featured on debut single "Mushrooms," October 2025). Each of them disrupts the balance and fuels the embers of improvisation, further broadening the band's sonic universe.
Moving between surf jazz, cinematic rock, and hypnotic trance, the band continues to venture into uncharted sonic territories, drawing lineage from Moondog, Adrian Belew, Morphine, and Sons of Kemet, and composing a visionary soundtrack for a world in turbulence.

Following two acclaimed albums—their 2020 debut and 'Sakurajima'—the trio continue their exploration at the crossroads of post-rock and stormy jazz. On stage and on record, the band sculpt misty melodic landscapes, obsessive riffs, and volcanic improvisations.
Recorded at Robot Studio in Ghent by Pieterjan Coppejans, composed by Clément Nourry, Marti Mélia, and Jakob Warmenbol, with Catherine Graindorge on viola. Mixed by Clément Nourry, mastered by Ben De Visscher, artwork by Sébastien Pescarollo.
