Despite the location not being a regular gig venue, the deep fryers and grill tops of Dalby Cafe provided ample inspiration for Real Farmer, who purged their souls and gave this white-knuckle spectacle. It's the same cafe that Peter Doherty made viral in 2018 after conquering its mega breakfast in under 20 minutes.
Albion Rooms (The Libertines' studio) in-house recording engineer Jason Stafford recorded and mixed the session, leaving it without overdubs and therefore keeping the original raw energy and feel. Meanwhile, director Roger Sargent (Fat White Family, Baxter Dury, The Libertines) was on hand to film the live session, capturing the absurd juxtaposition of everyday life in the cafe and the band going full throttle. Real Farmer's recording at Dalby Cafe is the first in a series of new Strap Originals curated sessions, with the next artists imminently due to be unveiled.
This new EP is the first official Real Farmer release to feature Jaap van der Velde (The Homesick) on guitar. Jaap takes the reins from Peter van der Ploeg, who has recently stepped down after a stellar run that included being on the band's first two albums.
Real Farmer's live EP comes hot on the heels of their second album Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right, which was released on 1 May through Strap Originals. There were spins for singles from the likes of Radio X, Radio 1 and 6 Music (Craig Charles, Chris Hawkins, Steve Lamacq & Huw Stephens). Meanwhile, frontman Jeroen Klootsema was Huw Stephens' guest on the 6 Music Roundtable.
In an 8/10 review, Clash described the album as "beguiling in its twists and turns", God Is In The TV (8/10) highlighted it as a "thrilling ride", and Louder Than War called it an "exhilarating record that stretches previously unseen muscles." Further backing in the indie press for the band has come from the likes of So Young, Indie Is Not A Genre and Under The Radar.
The four-piece have just recently wrapped up their biggest headline tour to-date - the I Will Survive! headline tour. They played all over Europe and did 12 shows in 12 days in the UK. Past highlights from Real Farmer's near constant tour schedule include festivals Pitchfork Paris, Primavera Sound and opening for Peter Doherty, Babyshambles and Protomartyr.
Real Farmer are: Jeroen Klootsema (vocals), Marrit Meinema (bass, vocals), Leon Harms (drums), Jaap van der Velde (guitar, backing vocals).
