Newcastle-based slacker pop specialist Melanie Baker shares brand new track ‘HAHA!’ (video here), out now, marking the latest reveal from forthcoming debut album ‘Somebody Help Me, I’m Being Spontaneous!’, arriving April 10th via cult Danish indie label Tambourhinoceros.
Flipping the script on feeling stuck and turning the Truman Show gaze of social norms into liberation, ‘HAHA!’ rides a mischievous wave of momentum. Building toward a chorus driven by a signature guitar line and Baker’s gleeful chant of ‘HAHA!’, laughing straight at expectation, the playful and confident indie rock offering delves deeper into the musician’s trademark style, aided by sharp lyrics and magnetic vocals.
Marking the follow-up to lead singles ‘Sad Clown’ and ‘Bored’, Baker's debut LP release is edging ever closer. Recorded in a small, feverish cabin in rural Wales, ‘Somebody Help Me, I’m Being Spontaneous!’ is a wily exercise in cartoon realism and sees the enigmatic musician turn to absurdist humour. Tapping into grunge, glam, riot grrrl and indie rock inflections throughout, Baker’s procession of riotous refrains, crunchy intros and towering bridges combine to perfection.

With her phenomenal live prowess developing at an impressive rate, Baker is primed to build on early plaudits throughout the press landscape (The Line Of Best Fit, Dork Magazine, Rough Trade, Under The Radar, Atwood and La Blogotheque), in addition to BBC 6 Music (Lauren Laverne, Craig Charles, Nathan Shepherd, Deb Grant, Emily Pilbeam + a Steve Lamacq in-studio interview), BBC Radio 1 (Sian Eleri, Jess Iszatt) and KEXP airplay. Kicking off her biggest UK headline tour to date next month, the college rock newcomer is ready to celebrate her debut LP’s arrival in style, having already toured alongside the likes of Maximo Park, The Wytches and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in recent times.
Speaking ahead of her single release, Baker explained: “I’m not trying to be liked anymore. This song is literally me laughing in the face of my oppressor. It’s a middle finger to anyone who tries to deny you the right to be yourself. I’ve found so much freedom and liberation in allowing myself to be silly and have fun again despite living in a world that still doesn’t want to accept Queer joy. I’ve found freedom in rejecting capitalism in the small ways I can and living MY life on MY own terms. I started letting myself be messy and sad and feel things. I stopped trying to be big and brave and strong all the time. I stopped masking my own emotions, anxieties and let myself feel fully. Suddenly after many years of not knowing who I was, I felt like I was looking in the mirror and seeing myself for the first time.
Melanie Baker’s ‘HAHA!’ is out now via Tambourhinoceros and available on all digital platforms.
