“There is a place I like to go, below the siren city”

Today (11th March 2025), Artist and Producer Later Youth reveals new single and video  ‘Nuclear Love’. “It's a dreamy lament for a lost lover while manifesting a happier future together” comments Jo Dudderidge (AKA Later Youth) on the track. Playfully flipping the typically pejorative phrase "Not in my backyard" into a positive chorus, he offers an escape away from the noise of the city with this breezy, sunny refrain.

‘Nuclear Love’ is taken from Later Youth’s debut album ‘Living History’ released later this year via Sideways Saloon, distributed via Kartel Music Group. The album navigates modern love, coming of age(ing) and the power of hindsight, sprinkled with macabre humour and capturing Jo Dudderidge’s ability to effortlessly transcend between indie and alt-pop, all laden with a soulful and rootsy underbelly.

“I wanted the production to sound a bit like old-skool hip-hop beats, sampling vintage soul piano-riffs (like Jurassic 5’s ‘Concrete Schoolyard’) but with a sweet lament over the top instead.”

After over a decade leading the much-loved indie-folk Mancunians The Travelling Band, the now London-based multi-instrumentalist has established himself as a sought-after collaborator, writing and performing with an array of talented artists including Victoria Canal, Chloe Foy, Rose Gray, Stephen Fretwell, Human Interest, Joyeria, Bette Smith, and longtime cohort Lissie.

With Later Youth, Dudderidge steps back into the spotlight, with his unmistakable voice and signature Wurlitzer electric piano driving the sound, blending dry heart-on-sleeve lyricism with modern spins on classic rock, soul, blues and alt-country.

Later Youth has a totally distinctive character. Sure, parallels with his previous work exist, but it occupies a unique universe of its own. “In The Travelling Band it’s a wall of sound; a sound we developed on the road. Later Youth is more minimalist, it’s about building arrangements where everything gets a space to shine”, comments Jo.

The title of Later Youth’s upcoming debut album, Living History, is a nod to the niche hobby of reenacting battles and reliving historical dramas. Jo comments, “I think writing and performing songs can be a bit like this—especially as you move further away from the person you used to be. After years of moving around, I found myself standing still. At these moments, I was able to look back clearly enough to see this particular period of my life for what it was… ‘Living History’ flips between a eulogy and an elegy to this not-so-distant past.”

This was a journey of intense self-reflection. "While recording the album," he adds, "I began to realise I was starting to feel distant from the protagonist in these songs. The catharsis of writing the album has allowed me to paint stories of my late 20s and 30s through a playful—though sometimes painful—lens. There was a period when I was confused about what I wanted, and there's a lot of tension in these songs between holding onto the past and trying to move forward. That’s life, I guess."
