alternative pop band FLEECE released their bold new single, ‘Chequebook’ on June 18th via Blue Heron Music. It’s the second taste of their upcoming album (expected this autumn) and a clear signal of the band’s evolving sound: bigger, louder, and unafraid to challenge power with purpose.

Led by guitarist Megan Ennenberg (MEGGO) on vocals, ‘Chequebook’ is a sharp, electric anthem that trades softness for confrontation. With biting lyrics and punchy instrumentals, the song skewers unchecked privilege, systemic rot, and the myth that success must come at someone else’s expense.

“It feels really good to get loud and call out unchecked greed,” says Ennenberg. “The kind of greed of people in power who are hot for hoarding wealth while so many go without. It’s angry, sassy, and meant to throw a punch at the illusion that success should come at the expense of others. It shouldn’t.”

Known for their genre-blurring sound, melding alternative pop, indie rock, psychedelic textures, and jazz, FLEECE has long balanced dreamy introspection with biting critique. ‘Chequebook’ marks a new tonal shift for the band: more direct, more urgent, and more self-assured than ever.

Formed in 2013, FLEECE’s current lineup features Matthew Rogers (vocals/keys), Megan Ennenberg (guitar/vocals), Jameson Daniel (guitar), and Ethan Soil (drums). Since their early viral success with 2015’s satirical “How to Write an Alt-J Song,” the band has evolved into a powerful voice in indie music. Their 2021 album Stunning & Atrocious marked a creative and personal turning point, with a fully queer lineup and themes of identity, vulnerability, and resistance.

Earlier this year, FLEECE re-emerged with the dreamy, introspective “So Much Better Now,” produced by Gus Van Go (Metric, The Beaches, Arkells), signaling a reflective shift. Now, with Chequebook, they come back swinging making it clear that their new era is as much about truth as it is about sound.

Onstage and off, FLEECE is driven by a core commitment to honesty, inclusion, and growth. Whether whispering or screaming, their music is a vessel for connection, sounding the alarm without losing the joy of making noise together.

FLEECE first made waves in 2015 with a satirical video called ‘How to Write an Alt-J Song’, which went viral for its deadpan humour and sharp musical parody. The band quickly moved beyond internet fame, releasing their debut album Scavenger the same year. Their follow-up, Voyager, was funded in part by a fan-supported Kickstarter and showed a more refined, expansive sound. In 2021, they released Stunning & Atrocious, a breakthrough record for the group both sonically and personally. With a fully queer lineup and a newfound focus on identity, vulnerability, and defiance, the album marked a turning point that cemented FLEECE as a band that isn’t afraid to say what they mean or laugh at themselves in the process.

Their music often oscillates between dreamy introspection and bold confrontation. Live, they bring a playful energy that mirrors the looseness and experimentation of their recordings. Offstage, they are vocal about values of inclusion, accountability, and authenticity.
