Attawalpa (Luis Felber) today released 'Always the Girls (Unplugged)' EP.
Towards the end of 2024, Luis and Freya Hicks embarked on a UK unplugged tour as a duo, supporting Liz Lawrence. Inspired by this experience, they teamed up with Shuta Shinoda (Spiritualized, Hot Chip, Ghost Poet) at the intimate Hackney Studios to create this EP.

The original version of the song 'Always the Girls' features on Attawalpa's recently released second album 'Experience' and is performed live by Felix (Will Sharpe) in one of the key scenes of the Netflix hit show 'Too Much', which Luis co-created and co-wrote alongside his soulmate in art and life, the writer and filmmaker Lena Dunham.
Recorded live with minimal overdubs, the EP captures the raw energy and authenticity of the collaboration. Drawing inspiration from Felix's performance at The Ivy House in Too Much, the EP features Matt Jones (No Fools/Journey to Experience Interlude) and Adam Sopp (Always The Girls) on piano, Luis on acoustic and electric guitars, and Freya Hicks on viola and background vocals.

Attawalpa began life as a de facto solo project. “At first it was me and [producer/bassist/co-conspirator] Matt Allchin”, Felber recalls, but slowly it’s grown into this seven-piece family, in which everyone’s creative, and we all have each other’s backs”. That ‘family’ – drummer Henry Danowski, veteran percussionist Maurizio Ravalico (Jamiroquai), Viola player Freya Hicks, keyboardist/tubular bell player Adam Sopp, Cellist Haydn Winn and multi-instrumentalist Matt Jones, in addition to lynchpins Felber and Allchin – are responsible for the co-construction of 'Experience', an album whose vivid, hook-laden sonic vocabulary helps upgrade the shapeshifting baroque pop-rock and mooching groove template of Attawalpa’s debut longplayer, 'Presence', which charmed critics back in the autumn of 2022. For Felber, having the luxury of a well-drilled, empathetic ensemble has been revelatory. “I’ve never been in a band where everything felt so positive”, he affirms. “We recorded it all live as soon as we felt we had the right palette for the song”.
Also, in the first artist signing agreement of its kind, the Daydream Library Series label will release the Dolby Atmos edition of the new album. Thurston Moore says of the arrangement, delineating the Dolby Atmos masters: “It is with a mutual respect and understanding of the surround sound technology, we trust Luis Felber with his articulate insight of height channels and free-moving sound objects to interpret his already gorgeously spaced-out album ‘Experience’ with three-dimensional objects with neither horizontal nor vertical limitations."
