Pom Poko UK Tour Begins in Portsmouth

Promoting the new album "Champion"

Artist - Pom Poko

Venue - The Wedgewood Rooms

Town - Portsmouth UK

Date - 7th October 2024

A welcome return to the UK for Pom Poko who's first date on this tour was Portsmouth or specifically Southsea and a quiet Monday evening at The Wedgewood Rooms.

Support were Low Girl, absolutely brim-full of traditionally structured mini classics. Their sound has hints of those late eighties and nineties kitchen sink bands such as Belle and Sebastian, a refreshing change to hear very organic music. They seem to be surfing below the waves at present and I hope they can surface into light soon.

As anyone would attest having seen Pom Poko before they are an extremely tight band, this new version has taken that to a higher plane as they proved even with travel tiredness what an amazing band they truly are. Champion was to be demonstrated and the songs though with their usual quirky syncopated rhythms have some added subtlety and delicacy such as the title track Champion which contains some beautifully subtle moments replicated on stage.

New tracks were interspersed with Like a Lady, Cheater and Danger Baby. All in attendance were lapping up everything and it seemed the response rose steadily in volume to show the appreciation of this band. I wouldn't like to single out any member as that seems unjust but I am going to anyway...  Martin Miguel Almagro Tonne produces almost machine like elements within his guitar playing that constantly surprise how the hell he does it? alongside Ragnhild Fangel Jamtveit it looks like chalk to your finest cheese though Jamtveit clearly plays her part as an ingredient in the mix, she make their gigs so engaging as the obvious focal point.

catch them on this current tour..... with haste
