Echobelly at The Concorde 2 Brighton Review and Photos
A December 1st visit on their current Tour
Artist - Echobelly
Venue - Concorde 2
Town - Brighton UK
Date - 1st December 2024
I trawled my memory for how long it had been since I previously witnessed a performance from Echobelly and worked this out to be 19 years ago, this is becoming an increasingly common thought. So it was I entered the Concorde 2 in Brighton looking forward to hearing both the old songs from their debut and also the musical directions they have taken since.
First up there was the opportunity to see and listen to Blue Violet, who judging by the video work taking place while they were on stage are being backed by their promotion team for great things to come? A strong charismatic showing, they mesmerised the audience and with the attention on the partners Sam Gotley and Sarah McGrigor leading the band gave an air of professionalism. Mcgrigor especially producing a rock / indie dynamic that harks back to Courtney Love while she
danced and shimmied while delivering well produced moments such as "Fire" and "Human after all"
Echobelly took to the stage with Sonya Madan and Glenn Johansson still the core members as they were when Everyone's got one was released in late '94.
As you might of expected the setlist incorporated mostly the first two nineties albums hitting a rich vein from that "Britpop" period beginning with "I Can't Imagine the World Without Me" on to "Father, Ruler, King, Computer" before a shortened acoustic version of "Insomniac". The strongest response was reserved for "Great Things" possibly their most anthemic song. Returning for their encore brought "king of the kerb" and "Dark therapy", still sounding fresh today, nineteen years hasn't diminished this band.
