Herbie May has shared his second single ‘Shoelaces’, the follow up to the striking debut release ‘Bleeding’ which came out towards the end of last year. ‘Shoelaces’ is released via new label Red Licorice Records.

“‘Shoelaces’ is my attempt at expressing that chasm between the heart's desires and one’s self-esteem. You want a life bursting with passion and insight and adventure, but you can barely remember whether you locked the door on your way out. You feel you could’ve been something special, and yet you can scarcely even measure up to normal.

“The song is born from fear of domesticity, of normality, of joining the queue. It’s a momentary, cynical, knee-jerk reaction that so many of us have when confronted with the drabness of our destinies. It softens though, into fragile hope that perhaps we can make peace with life, that maybe this IS all there is, and that it might just be enough… so long as you remember you’re not doing it alone.”

Herbie’s solo sound is stripped down, playful and emotionally open, with influences including Lou Reed, Orange Juice, The The, Courtney Barnett and PJ Harvey in the mix. With ‘Shoelaces’ Herbie sets out into the new year with big plan, with ore music to come after a support slot with the legendary Generation X last year.

The track, like ‘Bleeding’, was captured by Archie Dewis (fellow The Lounge Society bandmate turned sought after production guru) and Gordon Raphael, legendary producer of The Strokes.

The Lounge Society came to prominence during the pandemic with the incendiary single Generation Game (described by Lauren Laverne as one of her songs of the year) followed by EP Silk for the Starving and the album Tired of Liberty, all produced by Dan Carey (Fontaines DC and Wet Leg among many others) and released on Carey’s label Speedy Wunderground. The album was featured on most end of year Best Ofs.
